Mark Zuckerberg's metaverse might be closer than we think. Soon, we could be working inside virtual worlds and doing what we always did but without leaving the comfort of our homes. IKEA is actively moving in that direction with its new virtual store set up in Roblox. If that wasn't unusual enough, it is hiring people to actually work there, selling its furniture and serving meatballs.
Spotted by Bloxz Media on X/Twitter, this idea is part of the "Careers Done Different" campaign aimed to show younger people career opportunities available at the company.
"Get paid to work as a Co-Worker at IKEA on Roblox and experience how careers are done differently. With us, you have the opportunity to move departments, flex your skill and get promoted."

The employees must be over 18 and live in the UK or the Republic of Ireland. The company notes that this promotion is not affiliated with Roblox. To apply, you need to fill out a form, answering questions like "How do you feel about being turned into pixels?" and "If you were a pixelated IKEA furniture, which one would you be and why?"

The age restrictions are great to hear because Roblox has been accused of exploiting child labor before. Its head Stefano Corazza replied: "You can say, 'Okay, we are exploiting, you know, child labour,' right? Or, you can say: we are offering people anywhere in the world the capability to get a job, and even like an income." It was a highly questionable thing to say, which made the company hurry with some damage control in (I assume) many outlets' emails.
