Indie Developer Remakes Legendary Yume Nikki For PlayStation 1

You can also run it on PC via a PS1 emulator.

Indie Developer Elias Daler has unveiled his new project, which I'd bet will bring a tear or two to old-school gamers and fans of surrealistic titles: a 3D fan remake of the legendary 2004 adventure game Yume Nikki for PlayStation 1.

Perfectly capturing the vibe of both the original game and the PS1 era, Elias' remake currently includes two dream worlds – Block and Snow – Nexus, and Madotsuki's Room, with the developer considering adding more worlds and possibly even finishing the game in collaboration with Yume Nikki's publisher if the community shows enough interest and enthusiasm.

To build the experience, the developer used PSYQo as the PS1 SDK (unrelated to Psy-Q), compiling with GCC and creating models and levels in Blender. The game runs on a custom engine Elias has been developing for the past year and a half.

The fan remake can be played on an original Sony PlayStation, with the developer recommending xStation as the most stable way to run it on the hardware. If you don't have a console, the game can also be played on PC via PS1 emulation, with DuckStation suggested as the preferred emulator. "When setting up DuckStation for the first time, choose the directory where the BIOS is in – it's okay if the files don't show up in the Select Folder dialog," Elias notes.
