"What we're doing now makes developers way more happy."
Larian Studios
Larian's stance on Baldur's Gate 3 is quite clear: Despite its huge success and multiple post-launch updates that introduced new content for free, the game won't get a sequel or DLC. Simply put, the studio is done with it and moving on.
Recently, when asked about the reasons behind such a decision by Gamespot (spotted by PC Gamer), Swen Vincke, game director and Larian Studios' CEO, surprised many with a direct but honest answer: "It's boring."
"We tried to be in the DLC business, talked about that with BG3… there's just no passion. I mean happy player, happy business, but you also need a happy developer for a happy player. What we're doing now makes developers way more happy," Vincke said.
On the one hand, the team is aware of fans' expectations of it, as Vincke noted, "We heard it's what we were supposed to do, you know: huge game, huge hit and you're gonna make DLC this and DLC that and DLC there." On the other hand, if DLCs were to make, there might be a moment when they ponder and then question, "what are we doing?"
Although DLCs could be a profitable business that makes the money "pile up," a lack of passion would simply refute it. And obviously, the team has something more exciting to spend their time and effort on, which is a "big game" that Vincke jokingly said would come out in 2029. Joke aside, it would for sure take a lot of time to develop it, and during this time, Larian would be in a "media blackout" status.
The studio's decision is absolutely understandable for the fans, and they have expressed their support and trust in the developers in a discussion on Reddit, where the top comment shows how they have transitioned from being a fan of BG3 to a supporter of the entire studio, actively experiencing their other titles as well:
"As much as I'd love more content for BG3, I'm happy to see them move on to other projects they're passionate about. When the passion is gone the work is less fulfilling for the devs, and the end product suffers as a result.
This game has made me fall in love with Larian. After I'm finished with BG3 I'm planning to play both Divinity games, and I'm looking forward to whatever they have up their sleeves for the future."
