The recent data leak leads to the AI getting banned.
Italy has banned ChatGPT after the recent data leak that spilled some messages and payment-related information about the users of the AI-powered chatbot. The Italian regulator is concerned about ChatGPT collecting data from users and has temporarily limited access to the bot until the situation is resolved.
According to Italian data protection authority Garante Privacy, there is "no legal basis underpinning the massive collection and processing of personal data in order to ‘train’ the algorithms on which the platform relies."
Moreover, OpenAI doesn't inform its users what data is collected and why. The Italian SA also claims that the lack of an age verification mechanism exposes children to receiving "inappropriate" responses.
OpenAI had 20 days to address the concerns, under penalty of a fine of €20 million ($21.7 million) or up to 4% of annual revenues. The company complied with the request, as reported by BBC.
"We are committed to protecting people's privacy and we believe we comply with GDPR and other privacy laws", it wrote.
It also believes that AI regulation is necessary and hopes to open access to ChatGPT in Italy soon.
