Defeat mystical entities in Gurei, an upcoming action platformer with a hand-drawn art style.
Developed by Lobo Sagaz Studio and published by Astrolabe Games, Gurei is an upcoming Japanese mythology-inspired 2D action platformer with a gorgeous hand-drawn art style resembling that of Hollow Knight and Nine Sols.
In Gurei, you are put in the shoes of Rei, a human spirit tasked to defeat unruly mystical entities known as Kami in order to obtain their powers. Thanks to the game's dynamic difficulty system and its unrestrictive approach to exploration, players can confront Kami in any order they prefer, with each enemy's strength being determined by one's chosen path.

At your disposal, you'll have both the classic sword attacks, dodges, and head stomps, along with unique abilities gained by defeating the creatures. Whether it's a more powerful dash, a weapon for executing enemies, or the ability to heal – the skills you can wield will be determined by the path you choose in the game.

Beyond gaining Kami abilities upon their defeat, you'll also absorb their souls and personalities, which will accompany you throughout the playthrough, sharing their comments on in-game events. While some of their remarks will offer insights into Gurei's lore and gameplay mechanics, others will be less helpful, and it is up to you to understand which is which.

"The Kami inhabit a surreal castle located between the human and spirit worlds," comments the team on Gurei's story. "After each victory, Rei comes closer to the realm of spirits, starting to encounter peculiar characters from Japanese mythology. These creatures will add novelty and strangeness to your journey, providing commentary, unique animations, side objectives, and obscure secrets."
