Jesse Miettinen Is Updating His Smudge Mask Generator

Introducing the corners mask.

3D Artist Jesse "Blenderesse" Miettinen appears to be continuing development of his Smudge Mask Generator, a tool designed for visualizing wet spots. In case you missed it, the generator is fully procedural, easy to customize, and flexible in use. You can either integrate the generated gradient into your own setups or use the included premade masking system.

A new feature is the corners mask, which functions without any additional geometry and is much lighter than shader-based curvature or ambient occlusion methods. Jesse notes that while it can work with organic models to some extent, it generally requires hard edges to divide the mesh for accurate mask generation.

Last autumn, Jesse made all of his Blender add-ons available for free, as he planned to rewrite them in 2025. From the cottage generator to the raindrop simulator and weld shader, these tools can be downloaded directly from Jesse's Gumroad page.

Jesse is also working on a new version of his car rig generator, announcing it will have better spring physics and more:
