John Carmack, the creator of Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, and Quake and former Oculus VR CTO, has tested Bigscreen Beyond, a device marketed as "the world's smallest VR headset."
"Breakthrough OLED displays and pancake optics for stunning immersion. Custom-built to the shape of your face for uncompromising comfort. All packaged into an unbelievably light form factor," states the hardware's website.
Carmack noted that the headset is really small and light and "feels like a prop for a futuristic movie." It fits well and doesn't allow light leaks.
"The custom printed facial interface is comfortable, but not breathable, so it isn’t great for fitness activities."
He also mentioned Bigscreen Beyond's high resolution but said there are more internal reflections in the optics, and the quality "falls off more toward the edges."
One thing Carmack missed was integrated audio: "Having to mess with headphones severely impacts the minimalist feel of the headset." The biggest disadvantage, according to the developer, is that the device is not standalone, so you have to deal with the "cable to the PC and the tracking base stations."
In conclusion, Carmack said Bigscreen Beyond "should be in the mix" for those considering an upgrade to a PC VR system.
