Josh Sawyer On Issues Caused by Game Leaks and Early Announcements

Pentiment game director says that one of the major problems with leaks is the inability to defend oneself against unfounded claims and false narratives.

Pentiment game director Josh Sawyer has recently touched upon the topic of game leaks expressing his regret that they often cause players to jump to conclusions that often can be incorrect.

On Wednesday, Sawyer took to Twitter to recall how Pentiment details leaked before the announcement and led to misinformation.

Sawyer shared that when Pentiment's existence leaked, some players assumed that Obsidian's game was like Disco Elysium, while, according to the game director, it wasn't similar to ZA/UM's title at all.

One of the problems that the game director pointed out was that there was someone who was very vocal in their dislike of Pentiment and claimed that Sawyer, as the developer, couldn't possibly pull off something like Disco Elysium. Sawyer noted that it was frustrating for him to see these false assertions, especially considering that he was unable to defend himself or his work.

"One of the biggest issues with leaks and too-early announcements is that the community can and will just kind of Say Whatever and the devs are not in a position, legally and often creatively, to make definitive statements against that narrative," the developer concluded.

Sawyer's comments appeared shortly after a screenshot of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League hit the network, causing many players to draw conclusions about the not-yet-released game. However, it is unclear whether the game director addressed the problem in the face of the Kill the Justice League leak as this isn't the first time he's spoken about the subject.
