Kingdom Hearts 4 Gets Release Window so You Can Prepare for Playing as Mickey Mouse

Pixar's Coco is also joining the list of playable worlds.

Disney and Square Enix

Finally, Kingdom Hearts 4 is not just a dream but a reality that will grace players' screens sooner than they might expect. Since its 2022 reveal, the next main installment in the crossover series created by Square Enix and Disney has mostly stayed out of the spotlight until it finally returned at this June's Nintendo Direct.

Disney's D23 revealed a new trailer, and if you miss King Mickey, he's here as a playable character along with Goofy and Donald Duck. This is the first entry in the franchise where both characters are fully playable.

Mickey's paper-like levels, very much Paper Mario-inspired, are especially interesting: he walks through 2D and 3D environments and gets an origami-like look in one of the sequences.

The trailer also surprised us with scenes from Pixar's Coco, Sora battling more Heartless in Quadratum, and plenty of gameplay. It also featured plenty of characters, including some you may have only seen as simple 2D sprites before, like Sigurd and Vali. Riku also shows up, and it looks like he'll still be teaming up with Sora.

It's been a big weekend for Kingdom Hearts fans: Disney and Square Enix also announced that an anime series based on the franchise is in the works.

It won't be long before we finally know the full story of Kingdom Hearts 4, which is set to release in late 2027 for PC, Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
