God of War Ragnarök is a wildly successful action-adventure game, but would it be so if Kratos died at the very beginning of it? Well, apparently, we could have found out if the developers had gone with the original idea.
In an interview with MinnMax, the game's narrative director Matt Sophos shared that Kratos was supposed to die fighting Thor in early drafts.
"It wasn’t a permanent death. ... He would get pulled out of Hel, essentially, by Atreus. But it’s now been, like, 20 years have passed."
However, this version of the events "didn't ultimately feel right", director Eric Williams said he didn't want Kratos to just die and come back. More importantly, this would go against the message the creators wanted to send.
"We knew that we wanted the story to be one about letting go and changing. Knowing that Norse mythology is all about fate and prophecy and everything, we wanted to say that that's all bullshit. Nothing is written that can’t be unwritten. As long as you’re willing to change, make changes in your life, you’re not bound to fate."
Killing Kratos would make this whole idea crumble, so the developers abandoned this script.
