Larian Studios' Games Will Never Appear in Subscription Services

Baldur's Gate 3 creator believes "direct from developer to players is the way."

A couple of days ago, Ubisoft's director of subscriptions Philippe Tremblay implied that players need to grow comfortable with not owning their games, and not everyone agreed with the statement. Among those was Swen Vincke, the CEO of Larian Studios.

The Baldur's Gate 3 creator said that the studio's games would never be a part of a subscription service as he doesn't think it dominating the industry would be a positive change.

"It’s going to be a lot harder to get good content if subscription becomes the dominant model and a select group gets to decide what goes to market and what not. Direct from developer to players is the way. Getting a board to ok a project fueled by idealism is almost impossible and idealism needs room to exist, even if it can lead to disaster. Subscription models will always end up being cost/benefit analysis exercises intended to maximize profit."

He added that there are already several distribution platforms that developers need to rely on, and "should those platforms all switch to subscription, it’ll become savage." His message is clear: the whole industry turning to subscription services will create a monopoly and destroy any sprouts of creativity eventually.
