Life Sim's inZOI Developer Got Tired of Creating MMOs

"I got sick of it."

In a recent interview, Producer and Director of inZOI Hyungjun Kim shared why he decided to create a life simulation game, discussing his previous work in game development and how he got inspired to create a new life sim.

In his over two decades of work experience, the 50-year-old developer has mainly focused on MMOs, such as Aion and Elyon. He shared that he got tired of this genre and decided to make something completely different. "I have 24 years of game development under my belt, and I've been working on MMORPGs for the longest time," he said. "I got sick of it." The developer said that his previous games were overly competitive, and now he decided to turn to something relaxing. Apart from this, the MMORPG genre is widespread in South Korea, and, according to the developer, overfocusing on it could prevent industry growth.

Hyungjun Kim also revealed what sparked his idea to make a peaceful life sim and also to challenge himself: his son asked him to create a successful competitor to The Sims, a hugely popular life simulation series that is already 25 years old.

Life sim inZOI is made in Unreal Engine 5 and features stunning visuals of various locations and characters. It allows for detailed character customization, and, in a character creation demo that was opened for a short period of time recently, players recreated their favorite celebrities and characters from other games.
