The film production will be led by American horror producer Roy Lee.
As some horror fans revisit classic horror games this Halloween, great news has added some joy to the haunted atmosphere — Canadian game studio Red Barrels has announced that it is teaming up with Lionsgate to present their successful horror franchise Outlast to the big screen. This project will be led by American horror producer Roy Lee, together with J.T. Petty, who was heavily involved in the game's narratives.
The Outlast franchise has won very positive reviews for its immersive atmosphere and sound design. The original game has received huge commercial success since its 2013 launch and sold more than 4 million units by 2016. A standalone sequel, Outlast 2, was launched in April 2017. By May 2018, the whole series had sold 15 million copies. Last year, a prequel, The Outlast Trials, was launched, whose story was set during the Cold War. As the announcement post revealed, over 37 million players have ever visited the Outlast universe until today.
Roy Lee has appraised the game's role in the horror gaming genre and expressed great anticipation for the newly announced film:
"When Outlast launched in 2013, it changed the landscape of horror gaming, setting a new standard for immersion in the genre. Its deep, emergent lore has provided a perfect foundation for creating a film that delves into the psychological and physical horrors at the core of the franchise. I'm excited to bring this unique world to life for both new viewers and the series' dedicated fans."

Other than the announcement, no specific details have been shared about the film yet. It's unclear how closely it will relate to the game, whether it will follow the game's storyline or be given a new story set in the same universe. Also, there's no information on the estimated production timeline; therefore, we can expect more updates in the future.
