Make Your Characters Feel Alive With This Self-Balancing Active Ragdoll System
Rawad Akar's project is now out.
Earlier this year, we showcased a demo of an active ragdoll interacting with a sphere, which has now been released as a purchasable asset by Rawad Akar. It's a complete physics-based procedural animation and locomotion framework, ideal for physics sandboxes, brawlers, and interactive VR experiences.
To use it, simply attach the ActiveRagdollBrain to any humanoid character and click Generate. The system automatically duplicates meshes, configures joints, and maps all procedural solvers. The character's center of mass is dynamically adjusted, so it naturally leans into movement and tries to stay upright when pushed or hit.
The tool also predicts where the feet should land based on movement speed, adjusts stride automatically, keeps feet planted to avoid sliding, and adapts to uneven ground. Characters can react to impacts by relaxing their muscles, smoothly falling into a ragdoll state, and then automatically getting back up using a procedural animation.
There's a waypoint system with two AI modes: simple obstacle avoidance for open areas, or a maze-solving mode. A detailed robot character is included in the package, along with ready-to-use demo scenes and fully set up prefabs.
Right now, Self-Balancing Active Ragdoll System supports Unity 2022.3 or newer. Jumping functionality is planned for a future update, and stair support is currently limited.
