Marvel Rivals Might Feature Loot Boxes In the Future

A scrapped idea or an upcoming fall from grace?

UPD: A NetEase representative confirmed to 80 Level that loot boxes will not be coming to Marvel Rivals.

Original story: Ever since its launch earlier this month, Marvel Rivals has quickly become one of 2024's most sensational games, winning over hundreds of thousands of players and proving that both Marvel and the hero-shooter genre still have the power to thrill the gaming community when executed well.

It appears, however, that the acclaimed title may soon face a fall from grace, according to findings shared by Twitter user RivalsLeaks that point to the upcoming introduction of one of, if not the most despised game features of all – loot boxes.

NetEase

An avid fan of "lurking in files", RivalsLeaks recently combed the hero-shooter's directory and discovered numerous assets related to loot box mechanics. According to the user, there appear to be two new currencies in the works – Crystallization and Marscoin – which could supposedly be purchased using Lattice and Units and then used to acquire loot boxes in five tiers: Gray, Blue, Purple, Yellow, and Red, with Red likely being the rarest and Gray potentially serving as a recolor of an existing skin. RivalsLeaks also noted that the lottery system tied to these loot boxes seems to be time-limited and possibly connected to a special occasion of some kind.

Additionally, RivalsLeaks uncovered a variety of icons, a loot box model, and image sequences showcasing the opening animations of loot boxes, attached below:

While it appears that NetEase might be on the verge of making Marvel Rivals worse, another possibility has been suggested by VISCERAL, a prominent leaker and data-miner, and several others, who argued that the files uncovered by RivalsLeaks are nothing but relics from the game's development phase, during which the developers may have considered implementing loot boxes but ultimately decided against it.

As it stands, it's unclear whether the icons and images shared on Twitter represent Marvel Rivals' past or its future, and with NetEase remaining silent on the findings, nothing can be said for certain. We've reached out to the development team for comment on the loot boxes and will keep you updated.
