The 8 million figure was achieved thanks to the addition of the game to Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus.
Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy from Eidos-Montréal has hit a new milestone – the game has surpassed 8 million players since its release in October 2021. The news was revealed during Embracer Group's call with investors where the company discussed its Q2 2022 financial results.
Embracer noted that the 8 million figure was achieved, for the most part, thanks to the addition of the game to subscription services such as Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus.
"Our award-winning Guardians the Galaxy game just celebrated its first anniversary and with that, we passed the 8 million player count," said CEO of Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Phil Rogers. "Now we've seen great engagement from gamers with his title entering into Game Pass and PlayStation Plus quite recently."
Previously, it was reported that the game's sales at launch didn't live up to the expectations of Square Enix, the company that owned Eidos-Montréal prior to the studio's acquisition by Embracer. However, at the time, Square Enix said that holiday discounts stabilized earnings from the game.
In April, Eidos-Montréal's senior creative director Jean-François Dugas commented on the Guardians of the Galaxy's sales saying that he has "no regrets" and that the team did everything it could with the sales numbers just being "the reality of the market." At the time, he also shared that the studio already has some ideas about the future adventures of Star-Lord's team, but noted that there are no concrete plans for a sequel yet.
Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy is available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch via the cloud.
