Guardians of the Galaxy Launch Sales Undershot Expectations

Guardians of the Galaxy launch sales didn't meet Square Enix's expectations, however, holiday discounts stabilized earnings.

Square Enix published the outline of the results briefing that took place on February 4 following the company's quarterly report. According to it, Guardians of the Galaxy didn't meet the company's expectations regarding the game's launch sales.

Square Enix noted that despite last year the company released such titles as Outriders, NieR Replicant, and Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, its net sales turned out to be lower compared to the same period last year when Final Fantasy VII and Marvel's Avengers were launched.

Although Guardians of the Galaxy has seen a number of positive reviews, the publisher stated that "the game’s sales on launch undershot [the company's] initial expectations". However, Square Enix noted that the sales have grown since November 2021 when the company ran discounts throughout the holiday period. President of Square Enix Yosuke Matsuda commented: "We intend to work to continue to expand sales to make up for the title’s slow start."

The players' reviews have presumably contributed to the sales growth as well. Following the controversial launch of Marvel's Avengers, the audience, at first, was skeptical about the new Eidos's title. However, after the release, the situation has changed when a number of Steam users received the game with "overwhelmingly positive" reviews.
