Master Universal Render Pipeline With Unity's New URP 3D Sample

The sample features four environments with different art styles, rendering paths, and scene complexity to represent the variety of 3D projects that can be built with Unity 2022 LTS' URP.

Among myriads of new features and improvements introduced in last year's Unity 2022 LTS, the latest long-term support version of the engine, updates to its Universal Render Pipeline (URP) were among the most celebrated and widely endorsed by Game Developers and Digital Artists alike.

In case you missed the news, here's a quick rundown. One of the most notable additions of Unity 2022 LTS was the Forward+ Rendering option, which allowed for the utilization of more lights within a scene, thereby enhancing Unity's real-time lighting capabilities. Another enhancement was the introduction of Temporal Anti-Aliasing, which reduced aliasing issues.

Additionally, the URP was enhanced with the incorporation of a LOD crossfade feature that facilitated smoother graphic transitions, as well as the Decal Layers feature, enabling the addition of extra texture details in scenes while maintaining control over their application.

The release also introduced Shader Variant Prefiltering, which significantly improved build time and memory optimization. By analyzing the shaders used in a project and precomputing the necessary variants, this feature reduces build time and enhances overall game performance.

Lastly, the inclusion of the Built-in Converter simplifies the process of migrating projects from the Built-in Render Pipeline to URP. This functionality allows developers to take advantage of URP's benefits without the need to rebuild their projects.

To help users get the hang of the upgraded URP and show how its new features can be used to create, customize, and scale beautiful and performance-friendly 3D scenes, Unity also released URP 3D Sample at the recent Unite 2023 Keynote.

Designed to help you learn how to use the URP optimally across all platforms, the sample features four environments with different art styles, rendering paths, and scene complexity to represent the variety of 3D projects that can be built with the URP. The list of environments present in URP 3D Sample includes:

The Terminal

An architectural sci-fi building featuring PBR materials and realistic lighting. Drop in your assets for look development or teleport to three additional universes built to showcase the capabilities and customizability of URP across platforms.

Recommended minimum configurations: iPhone 6S or similar

The Garden

Inspired by shoin-zukuri, this nocturnal garden features vegetation crafted with SpeedTree, interconnected interiors, a stream, and lights built with URP’s Deferred or Forward+ rendering paths. This environment scales effortlessly on mobile devices and higher-end platforms.

Recommended minimum configurations: iPhone 6S or similar

The Cockpit

This heavily stylized environment uses a custom lighting model and is designed to run at high frame rates. It’s specifically tailored for VR headsets and lower-end mobile devices.

Recommended minimum configurations: Meta Quest 2

The Oasis

Enjoy this photorealistic environment that features Decals, Lens flares, PBR materials, and more complex Shader Graphs for sand, water, fog, and vegetation. Learn how URP can reach a higher level of visual quality for platforms with more performant GPUs.

Recommended minimum configurations: iPhone 8 or similar
