Mewgenics Sells One Million Copies in a Week
As expected from the most-played roguelike on Steam.

Mewgenics, a cat breeding RPG by Edmund McMillen and Tyler Glaiel, was released a week ago and has already sold one million copies, as the developers announced.
It's a nice feat for a game without a lot of promotion. Then again, McMillen is the creator of The Binding of Isaac and Super Meat Boy, so his Mewgenics was on fans' minds for years. With their efforts or not, the game has become the most-played roguelike/roguelite on Steam, drawing 115,428 concurrent players to its whimsical gameplay.
The idea is pretty simple, like most McMillen's projects: get cats, breed them, fight funny enemies, collect stuff, and start again. But it's the hidden complexity and variety that attracts players: the variations of traits and items are almost endless, even better than in TBOI, known for the fact that its runs are never the same.
Glaiel confessed that he was "blindsided" by Mewgenics' success, despite its creator's well-known name. "Mew had ~400k wishlists before reviews came out. Shot up to ~600k after reviews/before release. For those saying its success was expected based on pedigree, week 1 sales for games are usually a fraction of wishlists. So we both got a bit blindsided by this."
