"Athena" is going to power large language models.
Microsoft has been very interested in AI lately, pouring money into OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT and DALL-E. Now, reports say the company is working on an AI chip that will power large language models (LLM).
Code-named Athena, the chip has been in development since 2019, according to The Information. It is said the chip is being tested by Microsoft and OpenAI employees and should eventually save Microsoft time and money on its AI efforts.
There is no indication when we will see the chip, but the company is probably in a hurry considering the AI race every tech giant is trying to be a part of. For example, NVIDIA has recently announced its intention to sell AI services directly to large companies and governments. It also aims to improve chip design with its AutoDMP methodology that combines GPU-accelerated computing with AI.
