Microsoft Patent Could Convert Physical Xbox Games to Digital

The patent doesn't mean the system will be implemented.

Microsoft filed a patent for a method that allows validating ownership of physical games, which then can give access to the digital copy on another device.

According to the text of the patent, you will be able to use an external disc drive to validate a game and then play the digital version on another device. This can be especially useful for Xbox Series S users as the console doesn't have a disc drive.

It's not clear if the system will let you add the digital copy to your Xbox library. Moreover, the patent doesn't guarantee that the method will be implemented at all. However, it seems like a useful system, and we hope to see it in action.
