Microsoft Reportedly Regrets Missing Out on Genshin Impact

It is claimed that the tech giant tried to sign a deal with MiHoYo to release Genshin Impact on Xbox but couldn't reach an agreement. Now, the company is reportedly powering up its search for Chinese game hits to compete with Sony more effectively.

A recent report suggests that Microsoft had negotiations with the Chinese studio MiHoYo to release Genshin Impact on Xbox. This information was reported by Reuters which cited people familiar with the matter.

According to Reuters' sources, the tech giant approached the Chinese studio during the early stages of the Genshin Impact development, although couldn't reach an agreement. The sources also claim that Microsoft regretted missing out on the game following its success and the revenue Sony has generated since the title's release on PS4 and PS5.

One of the sources also believes that Microsoft's experience with Genshin Impact was one of the drivers of the tech giant's pursuit of Chinese developers.

As Reuters reports, Microsoft has started assembling a team whose goal will be to search for potential Chinese game hits. While the company used to primarily search for big-brand titles, according to the outlet's sources, it will now also focus on games from independent studios offering them attractive amounts of money for cooperation and releasing their games on Xbox and its game subscription service, Xbox Game Pass.

One Chinese studio, which wasn't named in the report, shared that Microsoft already approached it with an offer to add the sequel of its game to Game Pass noting that the deal was "many times bigger" than the company signed with Microsoft for the original game three years ago.

The studio's executive shared that the company is not signing the deal yet as it believes it can get an even better offer once the game development is finished.
