Microsoft's Studios Don't Develop Games for Xbox One Anymore

Development for high-end games now lasts four to six years.

Xbox Game Studios head Matt Booty confirmed that all 23 studios owned by Microsoft had stopped working on games for Xbox One.

As reported by Axios, he said the company had moved on to Gen 9, the current-gen Series X|S, and the titles on these consoles are playable on Xbox One via Microsoft’s streaming cloud tech: “That’s how we’re going to maintain support.”

The studios will continue to develop for the Xbox Series S, although some developers outside of Microsoft are not happy they have to optimize their games for both Series consoles.

“Is it more work? Sure,” Booty said. His teams are successful at making games run on the Series S. “They can plan better, knowing where some of the sharp corners are.”

Another change is that development cycles for high-end games are now four to six years instead of the two-three maintained before. It is connected to the increased complexity of modern games and the desire to reach higher technical marks with 4K-compatible graphics and advanced lighting.

As for how Microsoft manages its studios, Booty said it's "somewhere in the middle” between centralizing all decisions and letting studios do what they want.
