Meanwhile, Build A Rocket Boy scrambles to refloat the sinking ship with hotfixes.
In a rare instance of regular gamers and gaming journalists being in complete agreement, both sides have united in declaring MindsEye – Build A Rocket Boy's debut title launched last week to negative reviews and abysmal player numbers – the worst video game of 2025 so far, according to Metacritic scores.
At the time of writing, the game's Metacritic page is redder than a freshly picked strawberry, with a user score of 2.6/10 and a critic score of 43/100 – making MindsEye the lowest-rated title of 2025 by both metrics.
According to critics, BARB's "GTA killer" now sits alongside other poorly received games like Ambulance Life: A Paramedic Simulator (44), Captain Blood (50), and Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour (53). Gamers have also named MindsEye the worst game of the year, rating it even lower than The Last of Us Complete (3.0), S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Legends of the Zone Trilogy – Enhanced Edition (3.1), and Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour (3.5).
That said, please note that only six critic reviews are currently available, meaning it's still not impossible for gaming outlets to run to Leslie Benzies' defense and potentially nudge the score into the yellow zone. However, with 264 user reviews already in, the user score – typically a better reflection of a game's actual quality – is unlikely to shift significantly.
While the community is drowning MindsEye in dislikes, speculating on how soon the studio will shut down, and creating funny bug compilations, Build A Rocket Boy itself continues trying to turn the tide and refloat the sinking ship by releasing Hotfix #1, which includes a few fixes and changes such as CPU and GPU performance improvements, memory optimizations, and the option to modify Depth of Field. Whether this is the start of a No Man's Sky-style redemption arc or a futile attempt to polish what shouldn't be polished – it seems we'll likely find out in the near future.
