Mobile Games Generated $41.2 Billion in the First Half of 2022

The figure represents a 6.6% decrease compared to the same period in the previous year.

According to the recent Sensor Tower report, mobile games generated $41.2 billion in the first half of 2022. The figure represents a 6.6% decrease compared to the same period in the previous year.

The iOS marketplace saw a decline in consumer spending of 0.8% year on year (from $25.8 billion to $25.6 billion), while consumer spending on Google Play fell more significantly – by 14.8% (from $18.3 billion to $15.6 billion). The analysts attribute this decline to normalization after the surge during the pandemic as well as "economic headwinds worldwide." 

Honor of Kings and PUBG Mobile. including the Chinese localization Game for Peace/Peacekeeper Elite were the top-grossing games in the first half of 2022. Players spent $1.4 billion and $1.1 billion on these games respectively. The third place was taken by Genshin Impact ($986.2 million), followed by Candy Crush Saga ($593.5 million), and Roblox ($576.5 million).

Despite consumer spending on mobile titles being down in the first half of 2022, the total number of downloads slightly rose (0.4%) to 28.1 billion, compared to 28 billion in 1H 2021. This growth was delivered by Google Play – its downloads grew by 1.3% from 23.6 billion to 23.9 billion. However, AppStore downloads fell by 4.5%, from 4.4 billion in 1H 2021 to 4.2 billion.

In terms of downloads, the leaders of the first half of the year were Subway Surfers (148.7 million), Garena Free Fire (147.2 million), and Ludo King (87.7 million).

The total worldwide spending on mobile applications in the first half of 2022 was $65 billion. This is 1% higher than the $64.4 billion generated by both stores in the same period in 2021.
