Mobile Games Spending Declined 7.1% to $21 billion in Q1 2022

Both the App Store and Google Play saw a decrease in quarterly revenue.

Sensor Tower shared its Q1 2022 mobile report saying that mobile games generated $21 billion representing a  7.1% decline compared to the same period last year. Both the App Store and Google Play saw a decrease in quarterly revenue.

During the first quarter of 2022, Apple's platform generated approximately $12.9 billion, down 2.3% year-over-year, while Google Play's mobile games revenue dropped 13.8% to $8.1 billion. Sensor Tower states the reason for the decline is a "normalization in the market following supercharged growth during the onset of COVID-19". It also attributes the slower growth in consumer spending to such factors as a rising cost of living.

The report, however, noted that worldwide downloads of mobile games showed a year-on-year increase in Q1 2022, up 2.1% reaching 14.4 billion. The growth was caused primarily by Google Play, which grew 2.5% to 12.1 billion first-time downloads. App Store game installs remained stable compared to the previous year, holding at 2.3 billion.

Garena’s battle royale Garena Free Fire was the most downloaded game globally with 71.2 million installs, while Sybo Games’ Subway Surfers took the No.2 spot reaching 66.4 million downloads. It was followed by Homa Games’ Merge Master – Dinosaur Fusion with 49.4 million installs.

The top-grossing mobile games for the period were Tencent's Honor of Kings with $735.4 million generated across both Google Play and App Store, followed by PUBG Mobile with $643 million, and Genshin Impact which generated $551 million in consumer spending.
