In performance mode, they looked like hedgehogs.
Moogles are beloved mascots of the Final Fantasy series. However, their creation for the upcoming Final Fantasy XVI was complicated, and they became one of the biggest challenges of the development process.
The developers weren't even sure if they should add the creatures to the game as they were "too difficult to create and wouldn’t fit the feel of the world". But the assistant producer insisted on it.
According to art director Hiroshi Minagawa, the issues appeared when the team implemented performance mode, which alters the appearance of the polygons. As a result, moogles ended up having less fur.
"It kind of ended up looking like a hedgehog! We were like: 'Is…is this a moogle? Hmmm...' Eventually, we ended up putting in some processing specifically for the moogle."
The creators also mentioned other aspects of the game that were difficult to make, such as the amount of content and consistency of development.
Final Fantasy XVI will be released for PS5 on June 22.
