NetEase Invests in Polish VR Studio Something Random

The studio is currently working on two unannounced VR titles with one of them scheduled to be released in 2023.

Chinese game giant NetEase has made an investment in Polish-based VR studio Something Random.

According to the Polish outlet Puls Biznesu, the Chinese firm invested "several million dollars" in the newly-formed studio, although the exact sum of the deal was not provided. The news was also confirmed by Something Randoms CFO Piotr Goguś who stated that the company "managed to close the seed round with a strong investor and partner – NetEase."

Something Random was founded in 2021 by former Superhot devs Cezary Skorupka, Jakub Witczak, Anna Żurawicz-Skorupka and Piotr Goguś. The studio is based in Polish Lodz and is currently working on two VR titles, an "improvisation-focused" sci-fi FPS and a "train-themed playful" strategy game. One of the games is scheduled to be released in 2023.

The company's CEO Cezary Skorupka commented on the investment: "The world of VR games has a very dynamic future, and there is a huge potential in it. Virtual reality is an area in which we have experience, and a global investor appreciated not only our achievements so far, but above all, invested in games we are currently working on."

This is the first NetEase's move to invest in the Polish market. With this latest investment, the company’s number of known investments has exceeded 35.
