New PS5 Slim Model Does Feature a Detachable Disc Drive

Sony announced a new PlayStation 5 model, set to hit the shelves next month.

Proving previous rumors to be true, Sony has finally unveiled a new PlayStation 5 model with 1 TB of internal storage, a detachable Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive, and a slimmer design, which previously earned it its unofficial name of PS5 Slim.

As shared by Senior Director of SIE Content Communications, Sid Shuman, the latest PS5 iteration has managed to trim down its size by over 30% and reduce its weight by 18% for the standard PlayStation 5 and 24% for the PS5 Digital Edition. Notably, with the Digital Edition, users will still have the option to purchase the disc drive separately and install it later. The new PS5 model also comes complete with a horizontal stand, while a new Vertical Stand compatible with all PS5 models will be available for separate purchase.

"There are four separate cover panels, with the top portion in a glossy look, while the bottom remains in matte," commented Shuman. "A variety of PS5 Console Cover colors for the new model will be available starting in early 2024, including an all-matte Black colorway and the Deep Earth Collection colors in Volcanic Red, Cobalt Blue, and Sterling Silver."

The upcoming PS5 model is scheduled to launch in November in the US, set to be available at select local retailers and through Sony's PlayStation Direct website. The pricing options include $449.99 for PS5 Digital Edition and $499.99 for the regular PlayStation 5 with a disc drive.

"It will continue to roll out globally in the following months. Once inventory of the current PS5 model has sold out, the new PS5 will become the only model available," Shuman added.
