NFT Game's Sidechain was Robbed for Over $600 Million

This might be the largest crypto exploit yet.

Ronin, the sidechain of the NFT-based game Axie Infinity, lost over $600 million to a cyber attack. The hack happened on March 23, but the company noticed it only on March 29, when 173,600 Ethereum and 25.5M USDC, which is about $615 million today, were already lost.

As Ronin explained, the game's developer Sky Mavis’s chain consists of 9 validator nodes, five out of which are needed to approve withdrawals. The hacker managed to get control over Sky Mavis’s four Ronin Validators and a third-party validator run by Axie DAO – a decentralized autonomous organization.

It seems like Sky Mavis requested help from the Axie DAO to distribute free transactions back in November. The Axie DAO allowed Sky Mavis to sign transactions on its behalf, but the access had not been revoked since then.

Right now, Ronin is working with various government agencies to bring the attacker to justice. The company says the money is still in the hacker's wallet, which presumably means it will be easier to recover. Sky Mavis also promised to reimburse the affected users.
