Nintendo Reports Growth in Game Sales But Drop in Hardware Sales

The company's software sales kept growing in Q2 2023, while its hardware sales dropped by 19%.

Nintendo has recently published the financial report for the second quarter of the fiscal year ending March 2023, revealing that its net profit has increased by 5.2% reaching 656.9 billion yen (about $4.5 billion). The company's operating profit and net profit grew as well – by 0.2% and 34% respectively.

Nintendo also said that its software sales saw year-on-year growth in the quarter noting that all the games released from April to September 2022 have "sold well." Splatoon 3's sales, for instance, reached just shy of 8 million copies.

Other Nintendo games released in the period showed pretty good sales figures as well – Nintendo Switch Sports
has sold 6.15 million units, Mario Strikers: Battle League sales reached 2.17 million copies, and Xenoblade Chronicles 3 has sold 1.72 million units.

Additionally, the company pointed out that the titles released at the end of the previous fiscal year also showed robust sales with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe selling 3.07 million units and Kirby and the Forgotten Land selling 2.61 million units. Nintendo noted that sales of titles from other software publishers also kept growing during the period and shared that total game sales increased by 1.6% year-on-year to 95.41 million units.

However, at the same time, the company's hardware sales saw a significant decrease of 19.2%, compared to the same period in the previous year, and amounted to 6.68 million units. Nintendo attributed the drop in Switch sales to a shortage of semiconductors and other component supplies.

Based on the Q2 2023 results, Nintendo has adjusted its expectations for how many Switch units it will be able to sell in 2022. Previously, the company forecasted it would sell 21 million Nintendo Switch units, and now it lowered its forecast by 9.5% to 10 million units.
