Nintendo's Filing Reveals Split-Able Dual-Screen Gaming Device Design

Nintendo's innovative design features a DS-like console that can be snapped in half for multiplayer gaming.

Nintendo's recently disclosed design filing reveals an intriguing concept for a dual-screen gaming device that can be split into two separate parts. The filing, which was made public earlier this month but submitted in November of the previous year, showcases images of a handheld device resembling the Nintendo 3DS. However, unlike the 3DS, this device has the unique ability to split in half, enabling wireless multiplayer gaming between two players.

From the available images, it seems that this device functions solely as a handheld console without any hybrid capabilities. Notably, even when closed, the top screen can face outward. If this design were to materialize into an actual product, it is likely that Nintendo would recommend using a protective case to safeguard the screens.

"This electronic apparatus comprises a first device and a second device. The first device and the second device can be detachably attached to each other. The first device has a first surface, and a first display and a first connection unit which are positioned on the first surface. The second device has a second surface, a second display that is positioned on the second surface, a second rear surface that is on the reverse side from the second surface, and a second connection unit that is positioned on the second rear surface. The second connection unit can be connected to the first connection unit in a first orientation or in a second orientation that is the reverse from the first orientation. When in a first connection state in which the second connection part has been connected to the first connection part in the first orientation, the second rear surface is positioned so as to cover the first display. When in a second connection state in which the second connection part has been connected to the first connection part in the second orientation, the second rear surface is positioned so as not to cover the first display," as written in the full description.

Here are some drawings from the revealed filing:

While it remains uncertain if and when this design will become a reality, the concept of a split-able, dual-screen handheld gaming device presents an exciting prospect for Nintendo enthusiasts and multiplayer gaming enthusiasts alike.

Earlier on, during last month's Gamescom 2023 event, Nintendo discreetly showcased its highly anticipated handheld console, often referred to as the Nintendo Switch 2. However, the presentation took place behind closed doors and was exclusively reserved for a select group of developers.
