Nintendo's New Star Fox Game Lets Players Use AR Character Avatars
There are also AR filters that let you add certain animated features.
A few days ago, Nintendo surprised fans with a Star Fox Direct for Nintendo Switch 2, with Shigeru Miyamoto and Yoshiaki Koizumi sharing an in-depth gameplay breakdown covering the story, characters, and game modes. The official release date is June 25, 2026.
It's not a new entry in the series, but a remake of Star Fox 64. However, with its more realistic art style and other enhancements, it seems Nintendo is treating it as something more than just a straightforward nostalgia port. For example, Star Fox for Switch 2 will feature an expanded story and both online and local multiplayer support. It will also take advantage of the console's hardware capabilities, with GameChat support being used as well. The game will feature character avatars that let you change your appearance in GameChat to look like characters from the Star Fox universe, and they can track your head movement and facial expressions.
To enable this, you can connect the official GameChat camera or a supported USB camera. AR filters also let you add animated features like ears or a beak that move while you talk.
