Nintendo Says $10 Price Hike Will Not Be the New Standard for Its Games

Nintendo confirmed that The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom will cost $70 but noted that it will set costs for its upcoming games "on a case-by-case basis."

Nintendo has confirmed that the upcoming The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom will be priced at $70.

The new price of the game was reflected on Nintendo's website following Wednesday's Nintendo Direct. In an email to Polygon, a Nintendo spokesperson confirmed that Tears of the Kingdom indeed will be the first major release from Nintendo that will be affected by the $10 price increase.

However, they noted that the $70 price will not become the new standard and the cost of games is planned to be set "on a case-by-case basis." For example, the upcoming Pikmin 4 and Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp will be priced at $60.

Nintendo's increased price for Tears of Kingdom is in line with the pricing of current-gen games from other publishers. In 2020, Take-Two was the first publisher that began selling its last-gen console games at $70, starting with NBA 2K21. Subsequently, EA, Sony, Activision, Square Enix, and Ubisoft adopted the same strategy. Most recently, Microsoft announced that it would be raising prices for its major releases starting in 2023.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is set to release on May 12, 2023, exclusively for Nintendo Switch. According to Nintendo, the new installment in the series will not only take players through the vast lands of Hyrule but also bring them to the skies and beyond into an expanded world.

Most recently, the game has received a new gameplay trailer that provided a glimpse of the game's breathtaking locations and formidable enemies as well as offered a sneak peek at its gameplay mechanics and Link's new abilities.
