Nintendo sold more Switch handhelds than Wii consoles in the US in July, according to a recent report by Circana (via GamesIndustry.biz).
The agency says that Switch's lifetime sales are now only a million units behind those of Xbox 360 and less than 5 million behind PlayStation 2 in the country. Globally, as VGC noted, Switch already won this battle against Wii in February 2022, but it took longer to do so in the US, where Wii was extremely popular.
Earlier, Nintendo reported that Switch sales reached 129.53 million by the end of June 2023 driven by The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Interestingly, 30 million of these were sold in Japan alone.
What makes these numbers stand out is the age of the console. It might seem like it has been around forever, but Switch was released in 2017, while Wii launched in 2006.
Now, Nintendo is planning to sell 15 million consoles by March 31, 2024, which is a 16.5% decline, understandably, but is still an impressive goal.
