Nintendo Won't Be Hopping on the Generative AI Bandwagon Anytime Soon

AI's tendency to infringe on someone else's intellectual property rights is a big no-no for the gaming giant.

Even today, as numerous major game development studios race one another to see how many human workers they can replace with AI and how much computer-generated stuff they can incorporate into their games, some developers remain hesitant to embrace "the next big thing".

One such company has surprisingly turned out to be the gaming giant Nintendo, which recently revealed that their hesitation to join the AI trend stems from the same reason they love to bash everyone with lawsuits – intellectual property rights.

In a recent Q&A with investors (via TweakTown), Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa addressed the question of integrating gen AI into the company's working processes, noting that Nintendo is well aware of AI developers' tendency to utilize other people's intellectual property to train their models and emphasizing the studio's cautious approach adopted to avoid unintentional copyright infringement.

"In the game industry, AI-like technology has long been used to control enemy character movements, so game development and AI technology have always been closely related," Furukawa said. "Generative AI, which has been a hot topic in recent years, can be more creative, but we also recognize that it has issues with intellectual property rights."

Furthermore, the CEO stated that Nintendo doesn't need to rely on AI to produce "optimal gaming experiences", highlighting their intention to keep delivering unique experiences that cannot be replicated by generative AI.

"We have decades of know-how in creating optimal gaming experiences for our customers, and while we remain flexible in responding to technological developments, we hope to continue to deliver value that is unique to us and cannot be achieved through technology alone."
