NVIDIA CEO Doesn't Want "Well-Respected People" to Criticize AI

Big tech moguls not bouncing off the walls about the Next Big Thing? Preposterous!

Although many have come to expect big tech executives, as in, all of them, without exception, to endlessly froth about the Next Big Thing – VR, NFTs, the metaverse, AI, take your pick – it should be obvious that, at the end of the day, even high-level CEOs are still people, have differing opinions on different issues, and might even, as preposterous as it may sound, express skepticism about the current flavor of the month: artificial intelligence.

Not particularly fond of this reality is NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang, who, in a recent interview, voiced his disapproval of "well-respected people" saying negative things about AI, characterizing their concerns about the technology as a "doomer narrative."

"I think we've done a lot of damage with very well-respected people who have painted a doomer narrative, end of the world narrative, science fiction narrative," Huang said in his interview with No Priors. "I appreciate that many of us grew up and enjoyed science fiction, but it's not helpful – it's not helpful to people, it's not helpful to the industry, it's not helpful to society, it's not helpful to the governments.

There are many people in the government who obviously aren't as familiar with and as comfortable with the technology, and when PhDs of this and CEOs of that go to governments and describe these end-of-the-world scenarios and extremely dystopian future, you have to ask yourself, 'What is the purpose of that narrative? What are their intentions? Why are they talking to governments about these things to create regulations to suffocate startups? For what reason would they be doing that?'"

While no names were mentioned, Wccftech points out that the person Huang most likely had in mind when delivering his take was the CEO of AI firm Anthropic Dario Amodei, who has previously publicly supported AI regulations and warned that artificial intelligence could eliminate up to half of entry-level white-collar jobs, potentially driving unemployment to 10-20% within the next one to five years.

Whether one agrees or disagrees with Huang's statement, his call for people to start asking questions is undeniably a piece of advice worth heeding.

For instance, what are Huang's own intentions here? Why does he label anti-AI warnings a "doomer narrative" and oppose PhDs and CEOs criticizing the technology, particularly in front of governments? Is it because NVIDIA has been the biggest beneficiary of the AI boom and is known to work closely with the military? Could the company be on the verge of signing a deal that would tie its technology, AI, and governments even more tightly together? So many questions, so few answers.
