NVIDIA Is Open-Sourcing RTX Remix Toolkit

It will potentially open amazing possibilities for game modders.

NVIDIA is going to open-source its RTX Remix toolkit in June, widening areas of work for modders.

Remix allows you to remaster old DirectX 8 and 9 games, adding ray tracing and thus improving the lights. It consists of two elements: a runtime renderer – which lets modders expand game compatibility and advance rendering capabilities – and a toolkit that "facilitates the modding of game assets and materials." The renderer was open-sourced last year, and now it's time for the toolkit.

"Coming later in June, NVIDIA will be open sourcing the RTX Remix Toolkit, allowing modders to streamline how assets are replaced and scenes are relit, increase supported file formats for RTX Remix’s asset ingestor, and bolster RTX Remix’s AI Texture Tools with new models."

The toolkit's capabilities will also be accessible via REST API so modders can live-link RTX Remix to DCC apps like Blender, modding tools, and generative AI applications. NVIDIA will provide an SDK for the RTX Remix runtime to allow modders to deploy the renderer into other applications and games "beyond DirectX 8 and 9 classics."

"For example, a developer could connect Blender to RTX Remix, and design a button in Blender that instantly imports an original game asset selected in RTX Remix’s viewport.

"Once the asset is redesigned, it can automatically appear in the game once it has been saved in Blender, using RTX Remix REST API to automatically execute the replacement. Alternatively, modders with decades of experience in mod tools like Hammer could build a live link with RTX Remix, allowing them to upgrade Hammer’s asset replacement capabilities with RTX Remix’s instead."

NVIDIA shared that 20,000 modders have used the RTX Remix toolkit already to mod classic games, creating over 100 RTX remasters. By opening up the platform, the company aims to enable and inspire modders to build even more amazing remasters.
