The game's success couldn't protect the employees.

Virtuos is a studio that has collaborated with many developers to help them build games. For example, it is a co-creator of Oblivion Remastered and Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater.
Despite such big names and Oblivion's success, the team hasn't been spared from layoffs, reportedly, as Origami's journalist Gauthier Andres claims. From his information, Virtuos is cutting around 300 jobs, which is 7% of the whole workforce, focusing on China but also affecting other studios.
It's especially sad to hear, considering the company opened an office in South Korea just in March.
Andres says that Oblivion Remastered pulled a lot of effort from Virtuos but didn't offer much because of a lack of a royalty contract. "The result: teams put under severe strain for a purely showcase game, whose profitability is doomed to be questioned," he said (machine-translated).
He claims that back in February, at the end of Oblivion's development, the company announced a freeze on raises and a reduction in bonuses, so layoffs are not that surprising if it's true.
Unfortunately, the trend continues right after Xbox got rid of a huge number of workers. Hopefully, restructuring will help Virtuos stay united longer.
