One Gran Turismo 7 Car Takes 270 Days to Make

The developers collect data from laser scanning, photos, and videos.

Gran Turismo features not only exciting racing gameplay but also highly detailed cars. According to Kazunori Yamauchi, CEO of Polyphony Digital and the series' producer, it takes 270 days to make one such car in the latest Gran Turismo 7.

In an interview with Dengeki Online, he revealed that the cars are scanned using drones, and the process of capturing includes CAD data, color samples, and spec data provided by car manufacturers. "We collect data from in-house photography, video recording, laser scanning, colorimetry, and sound, and assemble them based on them," Yamauchi said (translated with Google).

Overall, about 1,800 cars have been recorded so far. Apparently, each model in Gran Turismo 7 contains a million vertices, with polygons increasing or decreasing depending on the distance.

Talking to GameWatch, Yamauchi said that now the studio produces around 60 cars per year, but he doesn't know if it will get Gran Turismo 7 to its predecessors' scale of 1,000 vehicles.

Speaking about the series, Yamauchi mentioned that what the creators want to make and what fans expect don't always match, and it's healthy. He said that "Gran Turismo Sport was a very experimental title, and in a sense, we proposed something different from what users expected. Therefore, the backlash at the time of release was quite amazing."

So with Gran Turismo 7, he wanted to "create something that the Gran Turismo users had been waiting for while incorporating the new elements that GT Sport opened up."
