On February 14, Andrej Karpathy, the prominent researcher of artificial intelligence and one of the founding members of OpenAI, who also worked as Director of AI at Tesla, recently took to Twitter and announced that he's left OpenAI.

To prevent people from making conspiracy theories and spreading false information, Karpathy wrote that "nothing 'happened'" and there was no "drama" surrounding his departure from the company. He noted that he actually enjoyed his tenure at OpenAI, working with the strong team and all the developers was a good experience.

As for now, Karpathy plans to focus on some "personal projects and see what happens".

"I left OpenAI yesterday. First of all nothing "happened" and it's not a result of any particular event, issue, or drama (but please keep the conspiracy theories coming as they are highly entertaining. Actually, being at OpenAI over the last – year has been really great – the team is really strong, the people are wonderful, and the roadmap is very exciting, and I think we all have a lot to look forward to," Karpathy shared via Twitter. "My immediate plan is to work on my personal projects and see what happens. Those of you who've followed me for a while may have a sense of what that might look like."

Karpathy began his career at OpenAI in 2016 and 2017, working under Co-Founders and later AI competitors Elon Musk and Sam Altman. He then transitioned to Tesla, following Musk in 2017, to lead its self-driving ambitions as the Director of AI until 2022. After departing from Tesla in 2022, he rejoined OpenAI in February 2023 and has been there since.

Speaking of OpenAI, a few months ago, users started noticing that ChatGPT got lazier and refused to comply with their requests, or that it didn't seem "interested" in answering their questions. The developers confirmed the problem in December and promised to fix it.
