The other day, I was checking out the most played games on Steam when I saw a new title that attracted an unusual number of concurrent players. It was called Banana, a clicker game where you, well, click a banana. I was surprised but let it be until 3 weeks later when I found out that over 800,000 (847,040 at the moment) people click bananas at the same time.
Well, kind of 800,000 and kind of people. In an interview with Polygon, the game's developer revealed that when the clicker had only 141,000 concurrent players, only a third of that was real players, and now that it's so wildly popular, it's hard to say how many actual people spend their time mindlessly pressing on a banana.
You might be wondering what makes people flood the game with bots and maybe enjoy doing the clicking manually. You see, you can earn banana skins, which can then be sold on the Steam Marketplace for more than you expect. As Polygon stated, the prices can go from $0.04 to $1,378.58 (that was the Special Golden Banana sold on June 9).
"I do believe that the reason why it mostly caught on is because it’s a legal 'Infinite money glitch,'" said Hery, one of the developers. "Users make money out of a free game while selling free virtual items."
Naturally, this simple process and the possibility of earning quite a bit of money attracted players and their bots. What is it, the new NFT? Collection fever? Why do people even buy these pictures of bananas? No one seems to know. Valve might take the game down, but for now, you can enjoy this bizarre banana game.
