The Pathfinder publisher has prohibited the use of AI-generated art and text in its TRPGs, including in third-party supplementary content.
Paizo, the publisher of tabletop role-playing games such as Pathfinder and Starfinder, has announced that it will be prohibiting the use of AI-generated art and text in its games – according to the company, this move is aimed at supporting talented artists and writers.
Paizo explained that since the company's inception, one of its main priorities has been "the assistance of countless traditional artists and writers" and added that the use of AI technologies poses a "serious threat" to the "livelihoods of partners" who have contributed to the success of Paizo's games. This is why the publisher says it takes "a firm position against the use of this technology in Paizo products."
Additionally, Paizo stated that it will also extend its AI-content ban into the Pathfinder and Starfinder Infinite programs, the programs that enable other companies and individual creators to produce and sell content that is officially compatible with the TRPGs.
"In the coming days, Paizo will add new language to its creative contracts that stipulate that all work submitted to us for publication be created by a human," Paizo's statement reads. "We will further add guidance to our Pathfinder and Starfinder Infinite program FAQs clarifying that Al-generated content is not permitted on either community content marketplace."
"Our customers expect a human touch to our releases, and so long as the ethical and legal circumstances surrounding these programs remains murky and undefined, we are unwilling to associate our brands with the technology in any way [...]," Paizo concluded. "Paizo will not use Al-generated 'creative' work of any kind for the foreseeable future. We thank the human artists and writers who have been so integral to our success in the past, and we look forward to working with them for many years to come."
