Palworld Beats Counter-Strike 2's Concurrent Player Numbers

At one point, "Pokémon with guns" had over 1.8 million concurrent players.

It seems that January 2024 will be forever remembered as the moment in gaming history when it was definitively shown that the sheer enthusiasm of game developers, motivated by the simple goal of delivering a game that players truly want to play, is still more important than sophisticated gameplay mechanics and next-gen tech. I am, of course, referring to the ongoing sensation Palworld, a.k.a. "Pokémon with guns", which, five days into its release, continues to break records and captivate audiences.

The latest noteworthy milestone Palworld has achieved is the title of the second-most-played game on Steam, which it got by surpassing Counter-Strike 2. At its peak, the game boasted 1,864 million concurrent players, around 50,000 more than CS2. "Thank you for playing the game even though it is a weekday. The team is working hard to ensure that you can enjoy the game even more comfortably," commented Palworld's developer Pocketpair on the achievement.

Previously, the developer also announced that the game sold more than six million copies in just four days, beating Dota 2 and Lost Ark in the most-played games chart. The game's success motivated gaming enthusiasts to contribute, with a VR version of Palworld appearing shortly after the game's release. Another noteworthy contribution is ToastedShoes' mod that replaces the game's pals with Pokémon models, which was recently DMCA'd by Nintendo and, at the moment of writing, remains unavailable.
