Pocketpair Communications Director and Publishing Manager John "Bucky" Buckley shared that he mostly played indie games and that they offer a wider variety of gameplay mechanics.
In a recent interview with 4gamer, John Buckley shared that he hasn't had much exposure to AAA titles and mostly plays games on PC, also tending to particularly like automation, factory games, and roguelike genres. The creator noted that indie games often feature unique mechanics and gameplay. AAA titles, according to Bucky, have overwhelming graphics and visual expression, but their gameplay mechanics often don't resonate with him.
"Indie games, especially recently, are incredibly unique, with many titles featuring systems I've never seen before," the creator shares.
Buckley explained that his inclination toward indie games may come from his preferred way of playing. After finishing one game, he likes to switch to something completely different, jumping between genres. Indie games, with their wide variety of mechanics, tend to suit this play style better.
In January, Palworld developer Pocketpair opened its own publishing division and received over 1,500 LinkedIn invitations in half a day, with hundreds of studios offering their games. Recently, John Buckley shared that they might not partner with projects using generative AI.
As for indie games, earlier, Sony Interactive Entertainment's Head of Indies Initiative, Shuhei Yoshida, said that working with indie games was like "treasure hunting" for him when, in 2000, the "indie boom" started.
