Do you want to feel old? On August 8, 2023, Papers, Please, a cult classic border inspector simulator developed and published by Lucas Pope, celebrated its 10th anniversary.
For those unaware, Papers, Please is one of the most iconic dystopian indie games that puts you in charge of the Grestin Border Checkpoint, tasking you to check on immigrants' documents, finding discrepancies, and forcing you to make consequential decisions while navigating intricate moral quandaries.
Upon its release, the game went on to receive multiple awards and nominations from the Independent Games Festival, Game Developers Choice Awards, and BAFTA Video Games Awards, with both gamers and critics praising the title for its engaging story, rewarding gameplay, and multifaceted characters.
To celebrate the title's 10th birthday, Lucas Pope issued a statement, stylized as an official Arstotzkan document, making several announcements and revealing some interesting info about the game.
"The Ministry of Scheduled Celebration congratulates Arstotzka and the Ministry of Admission for ten successful years of service at Grestin Border Checkpoint. A nation is defined by its borders, and the checkpoint in West Grestin represents an unparalleled success in presenting Arstotzka at its best," reads the announcement.
To celebrate Papers, Please's birthday, the developer:
- Reduced the price of the game to $1.99 on all platforms until end-of-day August 11.
- Started a merch shop with game-themed shirts, posters, stickers, and more.
- Released "LCD, Please", a browser-based "handheld inspector training tool".
- Added several of the game's songs to Spotify and Apple Music.
- Donated $100,000 to the International Rescue Committee.
- Revealed that the game has sold over 5 million copies worldwide.
