"If Bloodlines 2, God willing, is successful, Bloodlines 3 [will be] done by someone else."
If fans are lucky, they’ll be able to play Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2, the late-coming sequel to the original 2004 game, in the first half of next year. By then, it would be a decade after Paradox Interactive obtained the World of Darkness intellectual property, including Bloodlines, by purchasing White Wolf in 2015.
Despite the sequel's performance being in the air, Paradox has already made an early decision about what will happen with the third game in the series, if there is one. In an interview with PC Gamer, deputy CEO Mattias Lilja said, "If Bloodlines 2, God willing, is successful, Bloodlines 3 [will be] done by someone else, on the licence from us."
The Chinese Room
Bloodlines 2 had gone through a stumbled development period, switching developers from Hardsuit Labs to The Chinese Room in 2021, a few years after the former pitched the sequel to Paradox. "If we hadn't found The Chinese Room and seen what they'd done with the early work, [cancellation] would have been the next logical step, because we could not continue as we did."
Although the sequel was lucky not to be canceled, Paradox doesn't see a bright future for it. Lilja believes creating such games isn’t in their "strategic direction." Hence, the title’s performance doesn't matter anymore; Bloodlines has been seen as a "dead end."
"I think it's fairly clear, at least to me, and I think to you, even in the best of cases, Bloodlines does not have a super long shelf life. "
But this statement doesn’t mean Paradox has given up Bloodlines 2 already, as they have promised that Paradox won't "drop games" and will "make sure they work."
