Paradox's Next Strategy Is Mix of Civilization & Frostpunk

Apocalypse, Ancients, and hard choices.

Paradox Interactive

Paradox Interactive is famous for its strategies, like Crusader Kings and Europa Universalis, so the reveal of its next title was not a surprise at all, although the simplified view has been changed to a slightly more detailed landscape that reminds me of Frostpunk.

But there's no frost in sight in Afterworld, only Fallout-like post-apocalyptic lands and battles that Civilization fans will probably enjoy.

"The world you knew is gone, and its remains are ripe for the picking. To build an empire that spans the continent, first you will need to keep your tiny band of survivors alive: explore hostile wastelands, expand into new territories and rediscover lost technologies. Establish a handful of settlements, forge tribal alliances and clash with cultists, raider warlords, and the immortal Ancients who already think this world is theirs."

Paradox Interactive

It's never easy to start a life after an apocalypse, and this world is no exception. Choose to start as shelterfolk emerging from a failing nuclear bunker, a group of zealots looking for their goddess, or someone else entirely. The main goal is to survive and thrive in this procedurally generated North America.

Paradox Interactive

Afterworld offers a dynamic Ideas Tree so you can advance your technology and make sure your convoys and supply lines are as effective as possible.

Find allies, fight enemies, choose laws, and search for remnants of pre-Fall technology, trying to stay afloat.

Paradox Interactive

"Make choices that echo through generations. With thousands of lives depending on your decisions, a food shortage can lead to a famine, and a political misstep can fracture your nation. What will you sacrifice to keep your empire standing?"

Paradox Interactive

With Afterworld, Paradox wants to create a fresh and different GSG experience, following certain design pillars and principles:

  • Adapt to Survive: Players will need to adapt to what happens in the world, and their carefully laid plans may easily spin into something else. In that sense, it's more Crusader Kings than Hearts of Iron.
  • Rediscovery: We are not inventing, we are rediscovering and scavenging a lost world. There should always be new things to explore, and your powerful discoveries can fundamentally alter the story of your playthrough. This is also about rediscovering the history and lore of the world.
  • Shape Your Society: The people of the tribe are your greatest resource. To shape and control them, you need to create a suitable society that fits their needs as well as your own. The goal is to let players create the societies of their dreams (or nightmares).
  • Accessible, with Growing Depth - Afterworld aims to be the easiest GSG to pick up and get immersed in, without sacrificing complexity or depth. We do this by tying many mechanics to exploration and discovery so that they get progressively unlocked for a deeper and deeper game without overwhelming you during the first 10 minutes.
  • Immersive and Tangible: Afterworld aims to be the easiest GSG to pick up and get immersed in without sacrificing complexity or depth. It does this by tying many mechanics to exploration and discovery, allowing them to unlock progressively for a deeper experience without overwhelming players in the first 10 minutes.
