Persona 1 & 2 Remakes Might Happen One Day, Series Producer Says
Series producer Kazuhisa Wada said that the remake or remaster is a way of "cultural preservation."
With Persona 4 Revival, a remake of 2012 Persona 4 Golden, looming on the horizon with a release date of February 18, 2027, there's a possibility that we might also anticipate remakes of Persona 1 and 2.
There was no official confirmation, though, but Persona series producer Kazuhisa Wada said the studio's motivation for remaking the franchise's fourth entry was a form of "cultural preservation," and that might also apply to the prequels.
In a recent interview with Rock Paper Shotgun, Kazuhisa Wada shared that plans for Persona 4 Revival dated back to the creation of Persona 3's remake, which launched in full release in 2024:
"When we originally conceived the idea of Persona 3 Reload, we knew we wanted to do P4R as well; we had to put it on the backburner, but it was something we thought of at the same time."
The producer called revamped versions of games a method to preserve the creative work: "For me, I think a remaster or remake is some kind of cultural preservation." Wada then commented on possible overhauls of the earliest Persona games – Revelations: Persona, released in 1996, and Persona 2, dating back to 1999 and 2000:
"As a creator, it's your duty to take the things you've done and make sure they're not lost, and are still around in the modern day. From that same perspective, Persona 1 and 2 are something we'll probably eventually do too."
ATLUS, SEGA
Earlier, rumors already suggested that Persona 1 and 2 might receive remakes, with industry insider みどり (Midori) sharing that the games might get "updated forms."
Still, remaking the early ATLUS RPGs remains at the level of discussion for now.
Before, at the CEDEC+KYUSHU 2024 developers' conference, Kazuhisa Wada discussed how ATLUS' approach to making games has changed over time. The producer shared that Persona 3 became a turning point, and developers started considering marketability more.
