Phantom Blade Zero Uses Authentic Kung Fu Motion Capture

Donnie Yen's martial arts expertise is helping S-GAME Studio bring authentic kung fu choreography to Phantom Blade Zero's combat system.

Phantom Blade Zero, an upcoming samurai soulslike with Chinese cultural elements, described as a "kung-fu-punk" game, reportedly uses revolutionary motion capture techniques in its production. The mocap techniques are used to transfer kung fu combat to the game's scenes.

S-GAME Studio, the action RPG developer, collaborates with a Hong Kong actor, filmmaker, martial artist, and action director, Donnie Yen, who is a co-producer on the game. Yen worked on titles such as Star Wars: Rogue One and John Wick 4.

According to creative director Soulframe Liang, the team designed the motion capture process to record Donnie Yen and his stunt team's movements at full combat speed. The creator also explained that the combat system was built from the ground up, with mechanics shaped directly by what happened during motion capture sessions, including how a boss might need to react differently to a four- or five-hit combo.

IGN shared an insightful look at the creative process of visualizing martial arts in the game:

Phantom Blade Zero, described as "deep, dark fantasy with a mature and mysterious style," features several types of main weapons and numerous secondary weapons. The RPG follows the story of a warrior Soul, who is left only sixty-six days to live. His journey is aimed at unraveling a conspiracy that has ensnared the martial world.

S-Game's CEO and the game's Producer, Liang Qiwei, explained that the game's distinctly Chinese themes create a cultural gap for Western players, which led the team to blend authentic martial arts with pop culture into a "kung-fu punk" style. He noted that keeping these unfamiliar elements was intentional and remains part of the game's appeal.
